Two long-term care teams will present approaches to a quality sleep culture.
Leadership from Avamere Health and Rehabilitation, Eugene, OR, used lessons from the Nursing Home Resident Safety Collaborative to implement a new Sleep Hygiene Program. They saw phenomenal improvements in staff’s perception of resident safety, depression symptoms and anxiety medication reduction, and an resident cognition and satisfaction.
Jefferson Community Health and Life – Gardenside LTC, in Fairbury, NE, changed to a culture of natural awakenings six years ago. “As a result of this effort to facilitate natural awakening, Gardenside has experienced a decrease in falls, antipsychotic medication use and infection rates.” —Krystal Hays, DNP, RN, RAC-CT; Great Plains QIN Quality Improvement Advisor
Margaret Silebi, RN MSN – Avamere Health and Rehabilitation
Margaret Silebi, RN, MSN, has 39 years of nursing experience, eight of those as a director of nursing in long-term care. Previously, she held the position of chief quality officer at a hospital and taught Total Quality Management to regional leadership teams. Margaret and the administrator led a team at Avamere Rehabilitation of Eugene to improve the quality of sleep for their residents.
Debra Sutton, RN BS NHA – Jefferson Community Health and Life
Debra Sutton serves as administrator for Jefferson Community Health & Life Gardenside and Cedarwood assisted living, both located in Fairbury, Nebraska. They transitioned to a culture of natural awakenings six years ago. Deb worked in long-term care as a director of nursing for 19 years prior to working as an administrator for the previous 13 years. She has led Gardenside to 5-Star recognition and a Bronze Commitment to Quality Award and has propelled it to be a leader in Undisturbed Sleep/Natural Wakening.
